What will the next 5 years will bring?

That question should be asked when deciding on, or planning a breeding program. Do you look at trends, personal preferences or both? Do you factor in time, space and costs down the road, or do you just plan on winging it for now?

Many of us are guilty of starting and not having a long term plan or solid understanding of what could become of a successful program. We also adjusted and made sacrifices when needed. We stuck it out when things went bad, not only with your personal lives, but within the general hobby itself. Who would have thought that you needed to be in good with the “Kewl Kids” if you wanted to sales? Having the ability to navigate your way though slow sales, financial shortcomings and the unfortunate, but all too real “hobby drama” and “hate” will be your saving grace. You will find your own way to make your dreams come true, as long as you don’t give up.

So, I would suggest to anyone just starting out to look ahead and have a plan that goes beyond your first litter. Buy quality even though it is outside of your comfort zone. It will pay off not only in sales, but the overall stability of your long term program. Trust me, when I saw a $5,000 snake listed, I knew for certain that I would never be that guy to afford such luxuries, only later to go on and pay twice that on an animal.

It’s like anything else in life. If you really want it, you will make it happen.
